About the Iban Language

The Iban language is spoken by the Iban, who live in Sarawak and also Sabah state in Malaysia, Brunei, and in the West Kalimantan region of Indonesia. It belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family, and is closely related to Malay, (Sarawakian Malay). The Iban language is spoken by estimated of 700,000 native Iban of Borneo, and spoken widely by the non-Iban of Sarawakian people. The Ibans were the original inhabitants of Borneo Island, and the word Iban was an ancient original Iban word for people or man. The modern-day Iban word for people or man is mensia, a modified Malay loan word of the same meaning (manusia) of Sanskrit Root. Iban language is a subject tested in PMR and SPM, the Malaysian public examination for Form 3 and Form 5 students respectively. The language is mostly taught to students in rural areas with a majority Iban population, including Baleh (Kapit), Betong, Saratok, Lubok Antu and Pelagus (Kapit).
